Group Captain ALLAN RICHARD WRIGHT DFC*, AFC
Allan Richard Wright entered RAF College Cranwell as Flight Cadet in April 1938. After training Allan was posted to 92 Squadron at Tangmere in October 1939, initially flying Bristol Blenheim night fighters. In March 1940, the squadron converted to Spitfires. Allan flew his first combat mission on 23 May 1940 over Dunkirk and claimed a probable Messerschmitt Me110 destroyed and two damaged. The following day he added one confirmed Me110 and one 'probable' Me110 and on 2 June a Messerschmitt Me109. The Battle of Britain was a successful period with many more victories including several Me109s. On 30 Sept he was shot down wounded near Brighton and hospitalised.
An award of the DFC was made on 22 October 1940, the citation read: 'On night in August 1940, this officer displayed great determination and skill in destroying a Heinkel 111, under difficult conditions. Pilot Officer Wright has consistently shown a keen desire to engage the enemy on all occasions. He has brought down a total of four enemy aircraft and has badly damaged four more.' 
On 6 December 1940 he brought down another Me109. By July 1941 Allan had destroyed six more Me109s and received a bar to the DFC. Service at HQ Fighter Command and as an instructor followed until being posted to 29 Squadron at West Malling in March 1943 where he destroyed a Ju88 on 3 April. For the remainder of the war, he worked on training and fighter tactics. He became chief instructor at the Pilot Gunnery Instructor Wing of the Central Gunnery School and later commanded the Air Fighting Development Unit at RAF Wittering. In early 1945 he was transferred to RAF El Bellah in Egypt where he commanded the fighter wing of the Middle East Advanced Bombing and Gunnery School. Further command postings saw him through the post-war period until February 1967 when he retired as a Group Captain..

The original drawing, on archival quality toned paper with colour highlights, features the RAF 92 Squadron Spitfire Mk Vb of Allan Wright, flying from Biggin Hill in the spring of 1941.
