Original pencil drawing on archival quality toned paper with colour highlights featuring a British SAS team checking their location whilst on a mission in the Libya desert in 1942.
The British Special Air Service (SAS) was founded in 1941 by Colonel David Stirling. Based in North Africa its objective was to undertake small scale raids and reconnaissance missions behind enemy lines, causing as much damage and destruction as possible. Its original designation of 'L' Detachment Special Air Service Brigade suggested a substantial force of parachute units, but this was part of a disinformation campaign designed to distract and undermine the enemy. In fact the initial deployment was less than seventy men, but under the inspirational leadership of Colonel Stirling, ably assisted by the legendary Paddy Mayne, they were able to wreak enough havoc to convince the Germans they were dealing with a much bigger force. From these modest beginnings the British SAS has gone on to become one the the world's finest elite special forces units.
The Willys MB Jeep was the primary vehicle of choice for the SAS in Northern Africa. The rugged and tough design was an excellent starting point, but a number of modifications were needed to cope with the hostile desert conditions. These included the removal of anything non essential to save weight, an enhanced cooling system, racks of jerry cans for petrol and water, special navigation aides and the fitting of Vickers K machine guns.
The drawing is on top quality, very heavy weight (640 gsm, 300lb) Sanders Waterford Hot Pressed fine art paper stock that has been custom toned with a light sepia hue to perfectly complement the subject matter.
The drawing is triple mounted using high quality conservation mount board. Included in the display are excellent reproductions of the SAS crest in metal and padded uniform parachute wings. The mounted piece is 20 x 16 inches, a popular size for ready made frames.
