With flak-damaged engines losing power and streaming smoke, an RAF Lancaster struggles for height as it heads towards its base.
If necessary the pilot will bring the aircraft down in a field but far safer would be to make it to their airfield just a few miles away. Below the dawn breaks over a carpet of fresh snow; a scene that goes unnoticed by the crew as they use a combination of airmanship and will power to bring their aircraft home.
