The Hawker Hurricane Mk I of Squadron Leader Douglas Bader, 242 Squadron, on final approach during the Battle of Britain, summer of 1940. A controversial character, Douglas Bader is remembered to this day as one of the greatest aviators to emerge from World War II. Undeterred by losing both legs in a flying accident before the war, he was to become one of the leading protagonists of the Battle of Britain. Bader was credited with 20 aerial victories, four shared victories, six probables, one shared probable and 11 enemy aircraft damaged. This total would surely have been many more had it not been for the fact that he was shot down and captured in August of 1941 whilst on a mission over occupied France. As a POW he made several escape attempts before being sent to the infamous Colditz Castle prison where he would spend the rest of the war.
