During the early 1960’s many Lightning squadrons gave their aircraft colourful paint schemes, none was more striking than 56 Squadron (The Firebirds), who in 1963 doubled as the official RAF display team.

The canvas is signed on the back in permanent marker by four veteran Lightning pilots: Flight Lieutenant P V Boothroyd Flight Lieutenant George Fenton Squadron Leader Chris Taylor MBE Squadron Leader Grant T Taylor plus Chief Lightning Test Pilot Wing Commander James Leonard Dell OBE.
