The Messerschmitt Me110G-4 of legendary night fighter Ace Major Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer climbs into the evening sky in preparation for the inevitable arrival of RAF heavy bomber formations.
Far below banks of mist gather, punctuated by columns of smoke from burning factories; the result of the RAF raids of the previous night. Major Schnaufer joined the Luftwaffe in 1939 and spent the entire war as a night fighter specialist. He flew with NJG 1 until November 1944 when, still only 22 years old, he was appointed Kommodore of NJG 4. He had continual success in the air and by the end of the war had become the Luftwaffe's leading night fighter Ace with a total of 121 victories recorded in 164 combat missions.
