A Winters Welcome by Stephen Brown - RAF SOE Lysander aviation oil paintingA Winter's Welcome
As dawn breaks a Special Operations Executive Lysander Mk III of 161 Squadron taxis to halt after a long flight from occupied France. In the cramped rear compartment two secret agents prepare to disembark, relieved at last to be able to stretch their legs. They are greeted by a fresh fall of snow, with heavy banks of cloud promising more to come. Also there to welcome them are senior RAF officers who will waste no time in de-briefing the agents. The Special Duties Lysander pilots were as brave and as skilled as any from the fighter or bomber squadrons but the nature of their missions meant they remained largely unheralded, even after the war ended. These highly dangerous clandestine missions to take undercover agents in and out of France were a vital part of the allied intelligence gathering operations and undoubtedly had a significant part to play in the eventual victory in Europe.

Blenheim I - Winter Respite by Stephen Brown - aviation original oil painting RAF Bristol BlenheimBlenheim I - Winter Respite
A Bristol Blenheim I grounded due to heavy snow. In the years leading up to World War II the Bristol Blenheim was an important aircraft for the RAF. It was built in large numbers and saw use as both a fighter and a bomber and was a major improvement given its high speed compared to the biplane types it was then replacing. However it was soon found to be at a serious disadvantage to the more modern Luftwaffe fighters. This, coupled with frequent high-risk deployments, meant that the Blenheim crews often needed great skill and conspicuous gallantry to complete their missions.

Defiance Against the Odds by Stephen Brown - Luftwaffe Fw190 aviation oil paintingDefiance Against the Odds
Oberstleutnant Josef 'Pips' Priller, Kommodore of JG26, performs his final cockpit checks before starting to taxi his FW190 A-8 towards the runway. June 1944 and the Allied invasion of Normandy is underway. Hopelessly outnumbered the Luftwaffe have little chance of making any impression on the vast Allied armada of air power. One of the few units in the air trying to stem the tide is JG26 'Schlageter'. Josef Priller was to become synonymous with this defiance of overwhelming odds when he, with his wingman Herbert Huppertz, flew a single strafing pass along Sword beach. An action that later became immortalised in the classic war film The Longest Day. By the end of the war Priller had flown 1307 missions and achieved 101 victories. He was awarded with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.

Eastern Front Eagles by Stephen Brown - Luftwaffe Fw190 aviation oil paintingEastern Front Eagles
Focke Wulf Fw 190D-9s of III/JG 6 at Welzow early in 1945. The main aircraft is that flown by legendary Luftwaffe Ace Gerhard Barkhorn (Knights Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords). With 301 victories to his credit Gerhard Barkhorn is the second highest scoring fighter pilot of all time, surpassed only by the great Erich Hartmann with 352 victories. Born on 20 March 1919 Gerhard Barkhorn joined the Luftwaffe in 1937 and was initially posted to JG 2. After a short period he moved to JG 52 where he would stay for most of the war. Surprisingly it took 120 sorties before he recorded his first victory, in Russia on 2 July 1941. Thereafter successes came regularly as did recognition for his efforts in the form of personal awards. During his 273rd victory on 31 May 1944 Barkhorn was seriously wounded and forced to spend several months in hospital, not returning to service until October 1944. From January 1945 he spent 3 months as Kommodore of JG 6. The war ended for him with a flying accident on 21 April during a short tour flying the Me262 jet fighter with JV44.

En-route by Stephen Brown - RAF Mosquito aviation oil paintingEn-route
A de Havilland Mosquito B Mk IV of 139 Squadron over southern England heading out on a combat mission, 1943. With Pilot Officer CV Pereira at the controls the first phase of the mission is uneventful as his navigator checks and double-checks their course. As they approach enemy lines they will descend to tree top height and use the legendary speed and stability of the Mosquito to dodge radar and flash past defensive gun installations before executing a precision strike on their target. Although a highly versatile aircraft that performed many roles during WWII the Mosquito became synonymous with dramatic high speed, low level precision strikes such as those on the Amiens Prison and the Gestapo Headquarters.

Enter the Tempest by Stephen Brown - RAF Hawker Tempest original paintingEnter the Tempest
Hawker Tempest V of 486 Squadron at Newchurch April 1944. Pilot and a ground crew engineer make last minute checks before an early morning sortie in the early days of the newly introduced Tempest. Designed by Sydney Camm the Hawker Tempest V was a direct descendent of the Hawker Typhoon, an aircraft that had proved highly potent as a fighter bomber despite a number of design limitations. The Tempest built on the positive aspects of the Typhoon whilst at the same time eliminating many of its problems and improving overall performance. The first Tempest wing was commanded by Roland Beamont and consisted of Nos 3 and 486 Squadrons based at Newchurch in April 1944 and then subsequently joined by No 56 Squadron in July. As part of the 2nd TAF the Tempest was to prove a vital part of the Allied advance through Europe.

Fast Exit
A pair of Bristol Beaufighter TF.Mk X torpedo bombers of 236 Squadron, part of Coastal Command's North Coates Strike Wing, flash through a Norwegian fjord, 1944. Having unloaded a salvo of rockets and torpedos at German shipping targets the aircraft head for home: flying low and fast they hug the cliff faces of the fjord as much as possible to make it harder for the enemy gun batteries to lock on to them.

In the Air Tonight by Stephen Brown - SOE RAF Lysander original oil paintingIn the Air Tonight
A Westland Lysander of the Special Operations Executive embarks on another perilous covert mission into occupied territory. Although slow the Lysander's short take off and landing ability was invaluable in these early stealth operations. The crew of two needed to be very skilled in airmanship to locate and land at a remote location in the dead of night, usually to pick up or drop off undercover agents in liaison with the French Resistance.
