Green Heart Sunrise
The FW190 A8 'Red 1' JG54 of Oberleutnant Hans Dortenmann at Velizy-Villacoublay air base just south of Paris in June 1944. Oberleutnant Hans Dortenmann joined the Luftwaffe quite late in the war but quickly made his mark and rose up through the ranks. After initial training with JG54 on the Eastern Front he achieved his first victory on 6 February 1944. When the unit transferred to the Western Front Dortenmann continued to add to his victories and in December 1944 took command of III./JG54. In March 1945 Dortenmann was appointed Staffelkapitan of 3./JG26 finishing the war with a total of 38 victories. Under the leadership of the highly respected Hannes Trauntloft JG54 became one the most feared and respected Luftwaffe fighter units amassing some 9,500 victories in total. Trauntloft's own green heart emblem was adopted as the Gruppe's symbol and they became known as the 'Green Heart Warriors'.

Just a Few More Miles To Go - RAF Lancaster original paintingJust a Few More Miles to Go
With flak-damaged engines losing power and streaming smoke, an RAF Lancaster struggles for height as it heads towards its base. If necessary the pilot will bring the aircraft down in a field but far safer would be to make it to their airfield just a few miles away. Below the dawn breaks over a carpet of fresh snow; a scene that goes unnoticed by the crew as they use a combination of airmanship and will power to bring their aircraft home.

Legend of the Skies - RAF Hurricane Original PaintingLegend of the Skies
The Hawker Hurricane Mk I of Squadron Leader Douglas Bader, 242 Squadron, on final approach during the Battle of Britain, summer of 1940. A controversial character, Douglas Bader is remembered to this day as one of the greatest aviators to emerge from World War II. Undeterred by losing both legs in a flying accident before the war, he was to become one of the leading protagonists of the Battle of Britain. Bader was credited with 20 aerial victories, four shared victories, six probables, one shared probable and 11 enemy aircraft damaged. This total would surely have been many more had it not been for the fact that he was shot down and captured in August of 1941 whilst on a mission over occupied France. As a POW he made several escape attempts before being sent to the infamous Colditz Castle prison where he would spend the rest of the war.

Moonlight Mission by Stephen Brown - RAF Beaufighter original paintingMoonlight Mission
An RAF Beaufighter MK VI Nightfighter of 29 Squadron on a night mission in 1942. The Bristol Beaufighter was a somewhat unsung hero of Britain's air power during World War II. After a short development period the first aircraft entered service in August 1940. The Beaufighter went on to give outstanding service throughout the war, equipping a total of 52 Squadrons across several theatres of operation and particularly excelling in the night fighter and torpedo-bomber roles.

The Messerschmitt Me110G-4 of legendary night fighter Ace Major Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer climbs into the evening sky in preparation for the inevitable arrival of RAF heavy bomber formations. Far below banks of mist gather, punctuated by columns of smoke from burning factories; the result of the RAF raids of the previous night. Major Schnaufer joined the Luftwaffe in 1939 and spent the entire war as a night fighter specialist. He flew with NJG 1 until November 1944 when, still only 22 years old, he was appointed Kommodore of NJG 4. He had continual success in the air and by the end of the war had become the Luftwaffe's leading night fighter Ace with a total of 121 victories recorded in 164 combat missions.

Peril Over the North Sea by Stephen Brown - RAF Bristol Blenheim oil paintingPeril Over the North Sea
A Bristol Blenheim IV of 17 OTU struggles to maintain height over the North Sea, 11 January 1942. Taking off from RAF Upwood, Pilot Officer CV Pereira and his crew were hoping for an uneventful training flight over the east of England and the North Sea. Unfortunately the last leg of the route brought storm clouds, snow and freezing conditions. When the starboard engine failed while flying blind in heavy cloud, things looked bleak. The aircraft was rapidly losing height as they approached the Norfolk coast line near Scolt Head, but with some fine airmanship P.O. Pereira was able to coax the crippled aircraft to the shore where they belly-landed in marshland. The crew all escaped with just minor injuries but the aircraft could not be recovered from the boggy ground and the skeleton of it remains there to this day, slowly being reclaimed by the advancing sea.

Sentinel of the Seas by Stephen Brown - aviation original oil painting RAF SunderlandSentinel of the Seas
A Short Sunderland flying boat sweeps low over the snow clad hills of Scotland's west Coast. Below the tranquility of the small hamlet of Kingairloch is shattered briefly by the sound of the aircraft's four powerful Pegasus engines. The Short Sunderland was one of the most powerful and widely used flying boats during WWII. They were used primarily against the ever present U-Boat threat. Operating from bases on Britain's west coast, including Oban in Scotland, Sunderland patrols provided a measure of protection to the vital North Atlantic convoys. Sunderlands were also used to great effect in the Mediterranean, West Africa and the Far East. A testament to the aircrafts design is the fact that it remained in active service until 1959.
