Original pencil drawing on archival quality toned paper with colour highlights featuring English Electric Lightning F.6 XS904 being attended by pilots and ground crew.
First entering service in 1960, the Lightning went on to equip RAF squadrons for 28 years. Its immense power and rapid rate of climb made it the ideal point interceptor and for most of the Cold War it formed the backbone of the UK’s QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) unit. The Lightning is probably best know as the aircraft that would intercept USSR aircraft approaching UK air space, usually the Soviet Tupelov TU-95 ‘Bear’
Lightning XS904 entered RAF service in 1967 and spent most of her operational life with 11 Squadron, before being acquired by the Lightning Preservation Group where she is an important is part of their collection of historic aircraft.
